How to Fix a Leaking Gutter

Most gutter leaks are clogs, failed sealant or bad slope, all fixable on a Saturday. Here’s the right order.

Step by Step

  1. Clean first. Remove leaves and debris, then flush with a hose. Half of all "leaks" are overflows from clogs.
  2. Find the real leak. With water running, watch the joints, end caps and downspout connections, that’s where 90% of leaks live.
  3. Dry and prep the area. Sealant won’t stick to wet, dirty metal. Dry the joint and scrub off old sealant and corrosion.
  4. Re-seal the joint. Apply exterior gutter sealant inside the joint, smoothing it with a gloved finger for a watertight bead.
  5. Check the slope. Gutters should slope about 1/4 inch per 10 feet toward the downspout. Standing water means re-hanging a section.
  6. Test it. Run the hose again and confirm water flows to the downspout with no drips.
  7. Prevent the repeat. This cycle is exactly why our $49.99/mo membership exists, scheduled cleaning and sealing, done for you.
