Clogged gutters are the start of most winter roof problems. When water cannot drain, it backs up under shingles and freezes at the eaves. Clean gutters and downspouts before the first freeze, and confirm water flows freely away from the house.
Ice dams form when heat escapes into the attic, melts roof snow, and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. The fix is attic insulation and ventilation, not just chipping ice. If you had icicles or ceiling stains last winter, ask for an attic check before this winter.
Walk around the house and look up. Missing, curled or cracked shingles and loose flashing around chimneys and vents are entry points for melting snow. A free inspection documents these problems with photos before winter makes them worse.
Branches hanging over the roof drop leaves into gutters and, under snow load, can break onto the roof. Trim them back in fall. It is a small job that prevents a winter emergency.
Large icicles, water stains on ceilings, new drafts in upstairs rooms and gutters pulling away from the house are all signs to act on. Call early. Winter roof problems only get more expensive as ice builds.
Our Winter Services cover frozen gutter cleaning, ice dam removal by steam, roof snow removal, emergency leak repair and burst pipe response, 24/7. Our maintenance membership keeps gutters clean and roofs inspected through the season.
